Liz and I travel the country, passing along our experience and expertise as storytellers, teaching our clients that there’s an art to engaging your audience with words, gestures, the tone and quality of your voice and of course, the power of your message. The fact is, stories stimulate our emotions and create connection.
For me, there is no greater joy than celebrating the lives of exceptional women. As a longtime radio personality in Boston, I had the opportunity to create and host a weekly show called Exceptional Women. Over the course of 23 years, my co-host and I interviewed more than 600 women from every walk of life and in the process, our little show become the most successful radio show for women in the nation.
But the best part of hosting the show was meeting these women and hearing the stories. I had the chance to sit down with Mariah Carey. She was authentic and entertaining, sharing a story about her purple journal which she kept tucked away in her nightstand. As a lonely teenager from a broken home, she filled that journal with poems, thoughts and phrases and these words would come together to form her first 5 number one songs, making her the number one female recording artist of all time.
Marathon swimmer Lynne Cox told me what it was like to break the men’s and women’s records at only 15 when she swam the English Channel. And Sally Ride described the thrill of being catapulted through the air, upside down inside the Challenger.
These are the kinds of stories that color your life and change your world.
