Longtime journalist and anchor Liz Brunner is leaving WCVB-TV Channel 5 after 20 years to launch a media training and consulting firm.
The company, to be called Brunner Communications, will offer one-on-one media training and executive coaching to build brands for individuals and businesses, as well as talent development for anchors, hosts and reporters. Brunner Communications will also provide services for community relations training and social media training and management.
Brunner has co-anchored Boston’s top-rated newscast NewsCenter 5 at 6 for almost a decade. Her last day anchoring at WCVB will be on Oct. 17.
“I’ve been fortunate to report on the most significant news stories of the past two decades, but it’s time for the next chapter, to branch out and launch my own firm,” Brunner said in a statement. “I’ve always enjoyed teaching and now look forward to drawing on my 25+ years of broadcast experience to help others become comfortable in front of a camera or an audience.”
Brunner’s broadcast coverage has led to awards such as the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award, multiple New England Emmys, an Associated Press Award, and a Communications Achievement Award from the American Women in Radio and Television. In addition, she serves as executive vice president of the Boston Women in Media and Entertainment.
“Her new venture is a natural extension of the expertise she’s demonstrated ‘on air’ and we wish Liz all the best of success in her next chapter,” WCVB General Manager Bill Fine said in a statement.
Brunner started her career in broadcasting in 1985 in Illinois, and she began working with WCVB in 1993 as a correspondent for the nightly news magazine “Chronicle.” She was later brought into evening shows, where she has anchored NewsCenter 5 at 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m..
“I feel incredibly blessed to have been a part of the best team in Boston TV and I will miss the viewers and my colleagues dearly,” Brunner said. “This isn’t a good-bye, but simply the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the community I love.”
