I had the pleasure of interviewing beloved American poet Ms. Maya Angelou many years ago and I will never forget the way she shared her personal story with me. I felt as if she were telling it for the very first time, as if she were sharing a secret with only me that’s how she made me feel!  

This may be one of my favorite Maya Angelou quotes: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

She knew what she was talking about! I frequently share this quote with my One-on-One clients and in various workshops and seminars because I think it’s especially relevant for those who need to give presentations or make a “pitch.” How you make people feel is the essence of great storytelling, and great storytelling is essential for a great presentation and to becoming a great communicator.

There is actual “science” behind why storytelling works. According to recent research, telling stories actually activates more of the regions of our brains! Storytelling helps us remember, connects us emotionally and even changes our brain chemistry in a positive way. So, go ahead, make your listeners feel something because… they may not remember every word, but they will remember how you made them feel.
