Whenever I am giving a speech, I will often get a good laugh out of my audience when I share with them actual research that suggests some people fear speaking in public more than they fear death. It may seem a bit extreme, but it’s true! Why? Because speaking in public presents so many challenges! There are the physical challenges; your heart starts beating faster, your palms may be sweating, or you get such bad “cotton mouth” that you can’t even swallow. And, let’s not forget the actual mental and emotional fears; your mind goes blank, you forget what you’re going to say, and you may even freeze dead in your tracks. It’s happened… to many people.
It’s one of the reasons I love coaching people to help give them tips and techniques to not only get past some of those issues, but to actually learn to enjoy giving speeches and presentations. We are not born knowing how to get up and speak effectively in front of a group of people, we LEARN how to do it, and we can learn how to get better at it. Once you do, the world is your oyster. Not only can it help you further your career internally, but it can also help you build your business. That’s why I feel compelled to share this article with you; Discover a New Way to Market Your Small Business: Why You Should Pursue Public Speaking (and How to Be Good At It.)
I agree with Gene Marks, a successful author and business expert, who says the goal is never about promoting your business, but rather it’s about sharing your knowledge, helping others, and that builds trust.
So, learn to become a good speaker, get coaching if need be. It can make a world of difference taking you from just ordinary to extraordinary.
