What an adventure this spring it has been! From working with my first monk…to sitting in on a class at Harvard…to listening to the pearls of wisdom from 94-year-old Emmy Award winning actress Cicely Tyson. Ms. Tyson shared her inspiring story at Morgan Stanley’s Women’s Leadership Summit in Carlsbad, CA “Acting is not about being famous,” she said, “It’s about exploring the human soul.” If she read a script and her body “tingled,” she knew the role was right for her, but if the story made her “stomach churn,” she said no…no matter who the director was!
Tyson chose to be associated with stories that made people feel something and/or take action. Good storytelling is just as powerful on the screen as it is in business, and it’s a big piece of the work Candy and I do as Executive Coaches. We help people learn not only how to share compelling stories, but how to share their own stories. “Business stories” show us the way toward success and inspire us to take action.
But what action do you need to take to ensure you are relevant and ready for the next career opportunity? While auditing a class at Harvard Business School’s Owner/President, Management (“OPM”) program this spring, the topic was on succession planning and being ready to take over as the next leader. If 30% of your current skills set is obsolete in less than four-years, how do you stay relevant? With continuous learning. It is critical for business success! Work with an executive coach to hone existing skills, learn new skills, just say relevant and ready.

And, finally, it was an honor to continue to work with Make A Wish MA and RI, emceeing their annual Gala in April. Nearly $1-million dollars were raised that will surely create many wishes for children with life threatening illnesses.
